Astro-Imaging and Duct Tape?

ASTRO-IMAGING and DUCT TAPE?

So, you have arrived at your dark sky location, you are setting up your telescope and then, in horror, discover that you forgot one or more of your counter-weights! Seems kind of funny that such sophisticated optics and electronics can become so totally useless without a few pieces of well placed metal!

This is exactly what happened to one of us in the not too distant past (the name will not be revealed to protect the guilty!). We basically had two options: 1. Drive back and get the missing weights (a round trip of 180 miles). Or 2. Improvise with DUCT TAPE! Clearly there was only one real choice and it just so happened that we did have a fresh roll of that wonderful grey tape that has so many applications.

The photographs below illustrate how easily counter-weights can be manufactured out of large rocks and the judicious use of duct tape! As you can see, one counter-weight is in place with a number of large rocks taped to it to make up for the weights that were left at home.

Please note that not only should the rocks be of the proper accumulated weight, but that they also must be placed symmetrically about the declination axis (unless of course you want to counter-balance tube accessories!). Although of secondary importance, aesthetics for some is critical. A quick look at the photographs should allay any fears that the duct tape solution will in any way convey a "Rube Goldberg" appearance. As evidenced here, an artful application of the tape will certainly not detract from the attractiveness of a fine astronomical telescope!
